A Winter’s Dream

“The Eden Alternative philosophy asserts that no matter how old we are or what challenges we live with, life is about continuing to grow. Building on this new paradigm, it affirms that care is not a one-way street, but rather a collaborative partnership.”

On February 2, 2017, SHC of Greeneville hosted a Winter’s Dream Masquerade Ball. The elders in the community were eager to host a formal event where we could get all dressed up, eat, and dance. They worked diligently on crafting masks, creating decorations, and engaging the help from stakeholders. I experienced such laughter and pure joy as I watched the elders and stakeholders get their hair done, get their nails manicured, and get dressed up in formal gowns and suits.

The ball was a simple event, and had such a huge impact on many, but one stands out. An elder, Rose, dressed in a pink gown with manicured nails stated, “I haven’t felt this beautiful in a long time.” It melted my heart to hear her words for Rose rarely speaks much.

As a quality of life director, I am so thankful to be a part of the culture change I see happening in our home and the lives of the elders everyday. And I am looking forward to the next adventure our elders may have in store!
